Übersetzen Englisch-Deutsch 1

Translation is a skill which demands the highest awareness of equivalence between languages. As a language learning medium, it requires of the student painstaking attention to detail and a careful interpretation of what is being said in the original. Translation into German allows the student to develop their awareness for subtleties in the language such as collocations, style, tone and connotation. Furthermore, the course functions as an exercise in contrastive grammar: how are certain English constructions best rendered in German? How, for example, does one deal with a raised subject in German? The skill is also one of the key transferable skills that any student will take from their English degree, since the demand for spontaneous occasional translation from (and into) English is constantly on the rise.

Translation German-English 1

This course is the culmination of the courses taken in the practical language section of the English Department. As such, it is designed to incorporate elements of all the courses taken and give the students’ English a final polish. As with translation into German, the course contrasts the grammars of German and English, but here the emphasis is not just on understanding the subtleties of meaning, but also on being able to generate those nuances in a foreign language, which is a much harder task. Once again, focus is put on specific areas of the source language that do not easily transfer to the target language.
