Reading fictional and theoretical texts in a foreign language is a particularly challenging task because students can easily feel overwhelmed by unknown vocabulary, complicated syntactic structures or densely written academic or literary texts. In this module, students will have ample opportunity to practice and develop their reading comprehension and reading fluency by learning strategies that will help them to improve word recognition and decoding and by acquiring a variety of reading techniques that will enable them to approach especially theoretical texts in a more systematic and efficient manner. Students will become more aware of the strategies they use when reading and they will enhance their ability to choose the appropriate strategy for the problem at hand. Moreover, the students will be exposed to numerous fictional texts (printed and audiovisual), which is vital for the development of automaticity in reading comprehension. They will be given the chance to reflect on and discuss the characteristics of these texts and use their knowledge of literary genre, era, etc. to guide their reading expectations and become more proficient readers.
